Mattel's second run, the Thingmaker II. When it came out in the 70's, we hoped we would see another successful Creepy Crawler series, with new molds & goop etc. So what went wrong? Instead of us loving the 2 sets, we love to forget it. Most likely due to safety regulations, they used a different approach to making the bugs. First, heat the goop, then pour it in plastic molds, then wait for it to cool off. I remember it being a very sticky mess, due to the new kind of goop. It was in a somewhat solid form in the bottle, till it got heated up. The 3 large molds had some really neat creatures on them, which I still like to this day. Unfortunately, once you left your finished creations out (that is, if you were able to take them out in one piece), they dried up and became a curled up unrecognizable chunk of plastic.
I'm wondering if there's something we can use to make creatures with these molds. Anyone got any ideas?
There were 2 sets, a Creepy Crawlers set, and a Flower Fun set. Like I said, I do like the molds, and the box graphics were nice too. Some of the pictures below, courtesy of the Mike Speth collection.
